By Derek Harrison
This is relating to something I saw back in 1982. The creature was observed in Oct., 1982, by my girlfriend and myself near Bedford, Ind. My wife and a good friend of mine also saw something in Martin County, south of Loogootee, Ind., around the same time. Please e-mail me if interested . Thank you. --Derek Harrison
Please be patient with me. These stories are almost twenty years old and I'm not as young anymore.
So here we go. First I'll tell about the Lawrence County encounter.
My name is Derek Harrison I'm forty years old and I live in Lawrence County, Ind. I'm a veteran of the Marines and I am a registered respiratory therapist. I grew up in the outdoors. I am an avid hunter. I have been hunting since I was a small boy. I am familar with all aspects of the outdoors around here. It was October of 1982 and I had just been discharged from the Marines. My sister had introduced to me to a girl I will call Cathy. We had been picnicking at Spring Mill State Park. The weather was warm and sunny--a beautiful fall Saturday. We had really enjoyed ourselves and I suggested we go riding in the country.
We were driving on a narrow country road east of Bedford, Ind. The road ran down into a small hollow with a creek running through it. We were in a 4x4 pickup .We had just crossed a narrow iron bridge. I had stopped and was looking down to adjust the radio. Kathy looked up and stated that we were being watched. I looked up and what I saw was something I will always remember.
Standing about sixty yards in front of us in the middle of the road was something large covered in dark gray and brown hair which was long and blowing in the wind. It was standing upright on two legs. I could not see the face because it was late afternoon and the sun was still shining; we were looking east. The creature stood and looked down the road at us. He looked directly at us and did not move.
My date was terrified. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. I slowly opened the door of the truck. I did have a large caliber rifle with me. I slid the rifle out of the gun rack and started toward it. She remained in the truck. It continued to stand in the middle of the road watching us. I slowly walked toward it. The smell was terrible, like rotten fish or dead animals. I had walked to within 35 yards of the thing when it ran south off the road. It had a large stride and leaped across the ditch and was gone.
I continued toward it's position. When I reached the spot where it had left the road I became worried myself because it had ran through wild rose thickets which were thick and it did not slow down. These bushes were tall over my head. It did not slow down. I ran quickly back to the truck. My date was terrified so much that I had to take her home.
I did not report this to the authorities because I assumed no one would believe me. I have often wondered why I did not fire my rifle at the thing. I guess it just must have looked human slightly. I have been back to this site and the iron bridge is gone, replaced by a new concrete structure. Nothing looks the same. I will send the other stories later.
