Les Habitants du Poste Vincennes

1732-1778

Newsletter June 18, 2002

*Come and enjoy the very special ambiance of the Michel Brouillet House (a.k.a. "Old French House") on a summer evening. Take a giant step back in time with food, candlelight, music and good company in a French fur trader's home.*

The next gathering of Les Habitants du Poste Vincennes 1732-1778:

Thursday, June 27, 2002

Starting at 6:30 p.m.

Michel Brouillet House

First Street, between Hart and Seminary Sts.

Vincennes

* At 6:30 p.m., you will have opportunity to get acquainted with the Michel Brouillet House and enjoy refreshments and period music. Although the Brouillet House was built in 1806, it is the same type of French Colonial home built during the 1732-1778 period in Vincennes, and domestic life was much the same. Enclosed is a pamphlet about the house.

* Starting about 7:00 p.m., we'll have a meeting to discuss:

- Treasury Report

- Report on past events (Rendezvous, Farmers' Market, Clothing Program, etc.)

- a Special Invitation for August 17 from the People of Ouiatenon

- possible gatherings or events for the near and far future - come with ideas! We'll try to get one or

two things on the calendar now.

- any other ideas and discussions

- see the Les Habitants banner - it's beautiful!

Refreshments - you are welcome to bring some if you'd like. Terri will be bringing French bread and apple butter. Valerie and Mark Berry are bringing some beverages.

Table Service - you are welcome to bring your own mug and plate, though paper products will be available.

Light - we will be enjoying the atmosphere of the Old French House as daylight turns to evening. You may bring a lantern, candle or oil lamp.

Chairs - seating in the Old French House is, understandably, limited. Please bring a chair if you can. Hopefully the weather will be nice enough for us to enjoy the back porch.

Dress however you are comfortable. You are welcome to dress in period clothing (which would add to the atmosphere and give us more to talk about!), but it's not necessary.

This is a good time to learn about the Michel Brouillet House and experience it after dark. It also is a good time to meet casually with other members, and to learn more about the history and this organization. Please feel free to bring guests who may be interested!

… to Valerie Berry, Sarina King and Mike Cockerham for helping at the Rendezvous by representing Les Habitants and giving out flyers.

…(concerning the Les Habitants banner)… to Richard Day for doing the drawings and to Valerie Berry and Mark Redfern for helping Terri to paint it. It looked great on the tent at Rendezvous!!

… to Marilyn McCormick and the Alliance for allowing us to participate in the Grand Opening of the Farmers' Market of Old Vincennes.

Next month, Richard King (my "webmaster" husband) will be helping me to update and fix up the Les Habitants website. Among other things, we will be changing the "de" to "du" wherever our organization's name is mentioned! Here's a pronunciation guide, of sorts:

"Layz aubeetaun doo Post Vencen"

We'll practice! By the way, the website address is: http://rking.vinu.edu/leshab.htm

Watch it improve!
