Les Habitants
du Poste Vincennes

1732 - 1778

What We Are

Les Habitants du Poste Vincennes is an organization dedicated to the interpretation of the history and culture of Vincennes, 1732-1778. This period covers the founding of this post on the Ouabache (Wabash) River in present-day Vincennes, Indiana, to the time before the arrival of George Rogers Clark and his army, who took Vincennes (then Fort Sackville) from the British. During this time, the population consisted of French, Piankeshaw Indian and mixed-blood, as well as some black slaves. Les Habitants hopes to develop personas for habitants (farmers) and their families, merchants and traders, craftsmen, voyageurs and courier de bois, commandant, priest, doctor, slaves, members of the Piankeshaw village Chippekoke, a small number of military personnel, and others.

We are re-enactors, interpreters, teachers and others who work together to study this history, develop personas and, through living history, communicate with the public to make this period and place come alive. We have monthly meetings, gatherings or events, and we focus our efforts on Vincennes and the surrounding community.

Why We Are

Les Habitants du Poste Vincennes came into being in the latter part of the year 2001, answering a need for interpretation of the French/Piankeshaw era in Vincennes history. Excellent interpretation exists in Vincennes for other historical periods. Before Les Habitants, there existed almost no evidence of the French/Piankashaw history and its fascinating culture, as it was previous to 1779. We are trying to fill in the blank for ourselves, for others and for the enhancement of historical interpretation of Vincennes and the surrounding area.
